Wimbledon kicks off today and if you are as excited as we are you must have been counting down the days too. The weather has not disappointed, and looks like we are in for a very sunny day. If you haven’t picked up your handbook and are feeling a little lost on the rules and regulations of the day in terms of dress code – we are here to help.
While the players are under strict guidelines to wear all white (certainly no cream or off-white), there are no official rules for the spectators. Although here is no written rulebook to abide by in regards to your outfit, its best to follow a few simple rules to make sure you avoid any red faced moments (we suggests packing some suntan lotion to avoid this too).
Unlike Ascot, a hat is not a necessity, and the dress code rules have relaxed in recent years with even shorts and t-shirts now being permitted, but we would highly recommend avoiding these if you are lucky enough to attend a match in the Royal box or Debenture seats. You will find people tend to dress a little smarter in these seats, so leave your short shorts at home for this one.
A lot of people opt for white in an homage to the players, and due to the heat being so strong white doesn’t seem like a bad option, but it’s not a necessity. As the every day fashion rule states, we would suggest either chest or legs. Kim Sears has got it right here with a white mini dress with a high neck and loose sleeves.
Colour is also encouraged, with Kate Middleton leading the way (colour co-ordinating with your partner’s tie will also get you extra points)
A jumpsuit or midi dress is always a good idea, clinched in with a belt to give a bit of shape, a la Sienna Miller.
In terms of shoes, heels are actually discouraged by the Wimbledon officials. Standing up and walking for a lot of the day lends itself to a bit of foot ache, which would be lessened by a more comfortable pair of shoes. Dirty trainers are not permitted into the courts – we suggest a pair of comfortable flats or a kitten heel to give you that bit of glamour.
We think at Me & Maya we have the perfect dress for Wimbledon that manages to tick all of the boxes – the Leonie Dress. Shop it below.
Don’t forget a bottle of water to stay hydrated while you enjoy the day.
